Find the beats in a word

Recognise that a word can have more than one syllable.

1. Notice

A syllable is a unit of speech containing a vowel sound. The English word clever has two syllables. Written letters alone do not reliably tell you how a word sounds.

clev · er

2. Try it your way

Try saying clever slowly, then at a comfortable pace. Tap once for each syllable. This text activity cannot check your voice.

3. Check your understanding

How many syllables are in clever?

Practice and choices stay on this page and reset when you reload. No microphone, recording, pronunciation score or course completion is involved.
